Joe Atkins brings his band, Reverb Galaxy, to the pool on Saturday evening.
Described as “Beachin’ surf guitars, covers and ‘originals’,” you
can check them out for yourselves at www.reverbgalaxy.com. The poster at
the pool says that there will be an ugly Hawaiian shirt contest (is there
any other kind? Everyone’s a winner – how American); dancing girls (no
comment – ed.); limbo dancing and kids surfing contests; and other dreamy
stuff that Joe and his cohort will no doubt come up with on the spur of the
moment. Anyway, it will be fun, the board decrees such. I saw these guys
last year, and the scene reminded me of the old Durkheimian emotion of
“collective effervescence”: the passion and ecstasy that is found in
tribal rituals when communities come together to sing and dance and
dissolve the boundaries that separate us from each other – or somesuch
other sociological refrain. Well, maybe not, but it’s an agreeable
thought. The Fojol Bros will also be present, serving up whichever variant
of oriental food that is available. [Late breaking news, it’s Merlindia
– the Indian variant of the Orient. My favorite.] Thanks to Allison
Merten for our fantastic posters and Karen Everhart for the musical
line-up.
Sloooow Doooown, Please – Had a couple requests about this. For those of
you still living in the (very) early years of the 21st century, we request
that you slow down when driving in the car park and elsewhere near the
pool, especially when reversing. In the absence of rear-view cameras and
sensors that vibrate your seat when you are about to hit something (or
someone – we are less concerned about the things), please exercise
extreme caution when pootling about the exterior of the pool grounds. We
have had a couple of near misses recently – well, in truth, they were
near hits, not near misses – and we want to keep it that way.
Lost and found: there was a sale at the weekend. Some folks who lost stuff
on Friday night are afeard it was sold on Saturday. In any case, if you are
accosted by somebody saying “That’s my towel,” perhaps you could
negotiate a price that’s closer to what you paid for it than what it’s
worth. If, however, you are in the men’s room and you see the guy next to
you changing into your favorite underwear, perhaps he needed them more than
you.
And More on Your Underwear: Speaking of which, we are somewhat concerned
about the quantity of underwear that is left behind each day. We happily
have not (yet) had too much of this kind of thing going on,

(SFW), but we must be close. As the guards go about their business, I am
sure many of them are having their Walter Mitty moments, imagining that…
(NSFW). And isn’t a Walter Mitty-type character making a movie about
Walter Mitty, starring himself? Apposite or what?
The weather we had last week reminded me of a conversation that Samuel
Beckett apparently had with a reporter. Engaging him in small talk, the
reporter commented that it was a nice morning “Mmnn, yes it is” Beckett
replied. Reporter: “Good to be alive” to which Beckett replied,
“Well, I wouldn’t go that far.” As I perspired my way to and from the
Metro last week on the commute to work, I almost empathized. The pool was
like a hot tub, so our president has decreed that if that happens again,
she will order 300lb blocks of ice to offset the heat. Hold her to it.
Couple Recent Events: Movie Night and Bagpipes – On Friday night there
was a movie night at the pool. It was mesmerizing, watching all these
people sitting around, glued to the large screen, laughing and giggling
together at Puss in Boots and Charlie and Lola. Thanks Avi, for organizing.
Another night, we were serenaded with bagpipes as we left the grounds. Not
sure mesmerizing is the word, but maybe hypnotic. #funtimes@thepool
Already Looking towards 2013 – The board is starting discussions about
what we will plan to do in the post-season. We know some things already,
extending the deck on the toddler pool, and some extra shade and trees. If
you have any ideas, please feel free to share them with us. We will most
likely ignore them, but it might give you a sense of belonging or
something.
Tent Night: July 21 – Fair warning, another sleepless night is in the
offing. Nora Ephron may no longer be with us, and we may not be in Seattle,
but sleeplessness is available close to home. The last one apparently went
without a hitch. Fingers crossed that we can go two for two. And we do have
a calendar on our website, www.pgpool.org, that tells you pretty much
everything that's going on.
Salut,
~DJN
